Toronto Animation Arts Festival International (TAAFI)
On July 7, 2012, we were excited and honoured to be a part of the first Toronto Animation Arts Festival International (TAAFI) at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.
We convened a panel called The Art of Storytelling, which featured four storytellers from different media:
- Patrick Brealey, through music;
- Amos Danniels (aka Sight; Sight1), through graffiti and street-art;
- Ryan North, through his Dinosaur Comics; and
- Ellen Besen by analyzing animated films and screenplays.
The four looked at the similarities of structure of stories in their respective medium. Conversation ranged from the importance of a sympathetic protagonist to the constraints imposed by story structure, and to the beauty of improvisation. At the beginning of the panel, Patrick Brealey collected snippets of the audience’s favorite lyrics and performed an original song incorporating them all 30 minutes later.
